C180 W202 Autogearbox

I took my car in for a service to a local 'reputable' garage and the incompetant mechanic left the coolant cap unscrewed. So water got everywhere. The car started misfiring badly and we took it back twice. He said he had replaced the gearbox control chip because that had been damaged by the water. Car war okay but it changed gears ar higher revs than before.

A few weeks later the car was misfirng again. This time I decided to change the spark plugs myself (I have a problem in trusting mechanics after the last incident), Car was fine for a bit but it doesn't change gears until 4000 revs. Previosly it changed gears at 3000 revs. it is also guzzling fuel and is very sensetive to road gradient (i.e it kicks down a gear if teh road has a very slight slope, it didn't do this before). Over the past few days its also started to stall when in reverse.

Can anyone tell me how the gear changes are controled on the C180. Is it via the EMU? Any advice on what I should? Is it a matter of replacing a sensor?

Thanks

It's possible that the MAF sensor has failed/been damaged by the water.

Erratic gearchanges are a symptom of a dud MAF. They are VERY sensitive and will fail if they get even the tiniest bit wet.

Replacement is a 2 minute job, but new sensors are quite expensive.

It could be something else, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't your MAF.

Short of a fault code read out it is worth trying the MAF as Veed weeb says.
