Hi,

I am having an issue where the my tailgate/boot door on my 2016 GLC 250 SUV closes randomly from a fully opened stationary position while i am putting stuff into the boot. The door has done this 3 times now over the past few days. I normally open the boot using either the button on the tailgate or else the button on the drivers door while in the car.

However I think I may have inadvertently caused errors or something in the system or contributed to it. About 2 weeks ago the boot door wouldnt close fully when i pressed the button on the boot door as there were bulky items in the boot prohibiting full closure of the door. The boot door kept trying to close and each attempt it would open roughly reopen about 10inches (just enough to press the button on the boot door again). I manually opened the boot by hand with a little force (i know i should have used the button on the drivers door but i was in a rush). After moving around stuff to stop the interference the boot closed fully when i pressed the boot door button. However since then whenever i pressed the button on the boot door for it to close it would stop about 10 inches from closing and pause for a second or two and then close fully.
I found a work around for this by pressing and holding in the button for just a second (not too long to set the height programming) and then it would close albeit alot quicker than normal and quicker than it opens. Then as mentioned at the start of this tread i am experiencing the boot closing randomly whilst in a fully open position.

Has anyone ever experienced this current issue?
Is there a way of resetting or reprogramming the boot door to get it to just close at a normal speed and not closing randomly while in an open position?

Many thanks.

no idea about 'resetting' ... sorry
When the tailgate on my ML opens due to stuff in the way, I generally close it on the fob or tailgate button, wait for it to go down & then shove it closed by hand. Seems to work on mine. :)

Hello,
It might be that you just need to rest the tailgate...

Thanks Guys,

To explain a little more exactly what its doing; I was at the shops this morning and I used the key fob to open the tailgate door to put in a few bags. As the tailgate door went to the fully extended and open position it then straight away it started to close back down and then closed fully. This does appear to happen intermittently though as when I got home I repeated the same process again by using the key fob to open the tail gate in hope that it would do the same thing (trying to establish a pattern or if it was a setting). However the tailgate gate door on this occasion behaved itself and stayed in the fully open extended position until i pressed the button on the tailgate to close the door.

Its abit of a concern to be honest as the same thing happened my wife the other day and it started closing down on top of her. Normally it should stop when it has an obstruction but she had to push against it to stop.

Im open to any suggestions before i bite the bullet and bring it to a mechanic.

Thanks,
Rob

Hey mate, coincidentally i seen those videos yesterday and was able to set the height. mine doesnt have the auto open/close feature with leg movement. Today then for some reason it reverted back to the fully open position. See new post in this thread.

Thanks,
Rob

Probably nothing to do with it but I’ve had mine close on me a couple of times and I think the button on the key fob in my pocket had been pressed accidentally. Is there, perhaps, a sticky key on your key fob? Might be worth seeing whether you have the same problem when you use the spare key?

Otherwise, nothing useful to add - sorry

Hi All,

Just an update on this. I had mechanic friend have a look at the car and he put the diagnostics on it which showed no electrical faults. additionally all sensors and electrical items were checked and in working order. He maintains it has to be the piston struts as they wear over time and lose gas. After googling this possibility i came across a post in another forum which was the exact same issue as mine and the fix that person had was replacement of both struts.

I am looking into getting them priced up locally at the moment (Online they 47e a piece roughly) and hopefully it should be a 10 min job to replace the struts.

I will keep you posted if this does indeed fix the issue once they are replaced.

Thanks,
Rob

Hi all,

Just an update from my last post. I replaced both rods and cycled the tailgate door open and closed and it is functioning correctly again. I repeated the cycling a few times to be sure and the issue appears to be gone. I found that for one of the removed struts i was able to compress the piston with ease. See below picture of me pressing down with one hand on it (it should not compress at all!!). The other one was ok and will use it as a spare. I hope this thread will be of future use to some one.

Hi Rob, were these original Mercedes Benz parts? Where did you source them from?

I'm seeing the same issue on our GLC but so far can only find compatible parts online.

I’ve just changed the struts on my GLC cost me £100.66 from my main dealer part number A2539800300 and it took me mins to swap over, only one strut had failed but they come in pairs so did both and kept the other as a spare

Yes, was just quoted 5k aud by 3point motors to replace the motor for it. Advice was couldn't be reset. Will be taking it elsewhere!
