I didn't realise I had it until I saw @richlumb post last week. On Sunday evening went for a spin and put it in ECO mode - lift your foot off the accelerator and the "D" turns green. According to @richlumb it only works on vehicles with the 9-speed box with 4Matic.

The following day I noticed that the car had defaulted back to Comfort mode so I had to manually switch back to ECO mode.

I suppose it is not surprising that this car does not have an Eco mode.

All 9 speed box’s @Woodleigh the 4 matics come with a 9 speed box nothing else
Not quite sure what you mean there...
Is it all 4matics of a certain model come with 9 speed box, or all 4matics in general?
I assume you mean the former?

Mine is 9g (2016 CLS Shooting Brake 350d) but I don't seem to be able to force it into Gliding Mode even in Eco

I think it came in with the W213 or newer. Your 218 is more closely related to the W212.

I found this in my owners manual. Does your car have "adaptive adjustable damping” or ABC.

I have ABC on my car and it has "gliding mode” (in CV mode) so perhaps it is not solely related to the 9spd transmission.

Vehicles with adaptive adjustable damping: drive program E (Economy)

Drive program E is characterised by the following:
  • the vehicle exhibits particularly economical driving characteristics.
  • the vehicle pulls away more gently in forward and reverse gears unless the accelerator pedal is depressed fully.
  • optimal fuel consumption resulting from the automatic transmission shifting up sooner. The vehicle is driven in the low engine speed range and the wheels are less likely to spin.
  • the suspension exhibits comfortable damping settings.
  • the steering exhibits comfortable steering characteristics.
  • during deceleration, the engine is disconnected from the drive train. The vehicle uses kinetic energy and consumes less fuel (gliding mode).
  • ESP® provides the optimum compromise between traction and stability. Further information about ESP® more

Vehicles with Active Body Control: drive program CURVE

Drive program CURVE is characterised by the following:
  • increased driving comfort on bends.
  • the vehicle tilts actively into the bend. Further information on the cornering function more.
  • the vehicle exhibits particularly economical driving characteristics.
  • the vehicle pulls away more gently in forward and reverse gears unless the accelerator pedal is depressed fully.
  • comfortable suspension setting.
  • the steering exhibits comfortable steering characteristics.
  • optimal fuel consumption resulting from the automatic transmission shifting up sooner.
  • the automatic transmission shifts up sooner. This results in the vehicle being driven at lower engine speeds and the wheels being less likely to spin.
  • during deceleration, the engine is disconnected from the drive train. The vehicle uses kinetic energy and consumes less fuel (gliding mode).
  • ESP® provides the optimum compromise between traction and stability. Further information about ESP® more

No this is a feature exclusive to the Premium Plus model.
Mine is a Premium but I looked into why the Plus model costs an additional £3k and adaptive damping is one of the significant features.

Yes this is the strange thing.
I assumed that they didn't put Eco mode in AMG models but then yours has it...so I don't know.

2019 AMG S Class Coupe
My current car (C217 S63) has Glide Mode, as did my previous one (W213 E63s)

So one 4Matic and one rear wheel drive but both sharing the 9 speed box.

Unfortunately, as the car has to be in ECO mode to operate, it doesn't get used...

From the handbook of the S Class: -

Glide mode is activated if the following conditions are met:

* Vehicles with MAGIC BODY CONTROL: drive program CV selected.

* Vehicles without MAGIC BODY CONTROL: drive program E is selected.

* The speed is within a suitable range.

* The road's course is suitable, e.g. no steep uphill or downhill inclines or tight bends.

* You do not depress the accelerator or brake pedal.

* Glide mode can also be activated if you have selected the Eco setting for the drive when in drive program=I*

Glide mode is deactivated again if one of the conditions is no longer met.

Vehicles with Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC: when Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is active, the glide mode function is not available.
