Hi All,
After reading about how Mercedes were able to get 1000+ Miles out of a tankfull ...ok it was on a track etc .....

I wondered if anyone could tell me where the green band is in the rev range of a 3.2 Cdi engine with auto dearbox?

I've had the car for 3 weeks so I've been trying different revs + related speeds more for fun really to see what mpg values I could get on the fuel computer per trip.

My best/most consistant so far travelling to work which is 30 miles Total distance. Its along normal 30mph roads, 20 miles motorway travelling at 56mph then back to normal 30 mph roads , has shown an average of 42mpg which sounds pretty good to me and gives me a tankfull range of around 450miles?

Whats your experience ?

Cheers

Hi and welcome,, It does make driving different or a little interesting to see what figures can be achieved. Most with the 320cdi boast of the good fuel consumption. What does it say in the handbook, I run a 5lt V8 the book says 32mpg, yet under any conditions or speed I have never bettered 29.9 with the average best of 28.9mpg

I think you'll find your range is a lot better than that. The 320 has an 80l tank afaik which is 17.6 galls so a theoretical range of 740 miles on your figures.
My trip sits between 33 and 42 most of the time and I see a genuine (full to sucking fumes) range of around 600 miles (36mpg) but then I have to climb the pennines twice a day and the M62 is a bit of a racetrack in the evenings, plus a fair bit of stop-start so I see no reason why, driven carefully in the right conditions I couldn't eek another 150 miles out.
The best I've had the trip to was 48mpg. To achieve that I kept the revs around 2k or under and held the throttle position stable on uphills, allowing it to slow if necessary and then once back up to 70 on the way down, eased off the pedal and coasted. It took 120 miles of that to get it that high. By the time I'd driven the 5 miles from the motorway to my house it was down to 44 :-(
Some folk reckon they get 50mpg from an E270 - not in mine they can't!
I did get it reading 50 once - but that was after resetting it, whilst on cruise, at 50mph on the flat. Once the road cleared it was history and it didn't allow for the 30 mins of city crawling I had done to reach the motorway or the acceleration to get to that point.

Hi all, just thought I would chip in here and say my 2000 320cdi 210 is topped up with just over 14 galls. It averages about 36/37 mpg steady driving.
Just as well as road tax over here in ireland is 1500 euro!

Cheers Chaps ....

Thanks for the replies chaps .........

Today I had 41mpg again ...just toodling at around 1600/1800 revs ....
To be fair it can be such a LAZY RELAXING car to drive .....
And yet ...kick it down and whoosh !!!

I couldn't see anything in the manual for the most efficient revs location for the engine.

I find that a bit strange as when you drive Merc trucks the green, amber, red bands are clearly marked. Of course maybe its something to do with the fact in them your getting 6-10 to the gallon chuckle !!

Cheers again

The 320CDi puts out 510NM of torque between 1600rpm & 2800rpm.
Somewhere within that range will give best mpg.

CDI has a smaller tank than the petrol 320 doesn't it?
