Hi all,
I acquired not too long ago a 1977 280e with m110 engine (L6 w/ DOHC) vin 123.033. It badly needed a rebuild. So I rebuilt it with new piston rings and valve seals, etc. As far as I can remember, the car only had problems with holding cylinder pressure.
After the rebuild, I'm having a hard time getting the engine to run smooth or start at all. The problem I'm seeing is that there's an ignition problem again or there's a serious compression problem on one or more of the six pistons causing it to basically run on 5/6 or less pistons.
This sort of confuses me because I took my time on the rebuild and sat the rings 180 degrees opposite to one another and had the block rehoned of course. The only thing I can suspect is that I have a bent valve causing a cylinder to not shut completely. I suppose I should probably video tape the car trying to start and let you guys hear it for yourselves, but anyways.
When I was timing the engine back when it was on stands I was turning the crank to bring it into sync with the cams and I might have bumped a valve with a piston although it was by hand on the crank bolt. Could that have bent a valve enough to cause a serious leak?
Your feedback is appreciated,
