My hobby is buying broken Ride on mowers, fixing, servicing and selling. I am always looking for cheap oil to use in them.
Anyway I have seen Mannol defender oil for this, but see that it has a MB 299.1 Manufacturers Approval and wondered how good it would be in a Mercedes. Has anyone used this? My cars are all Petrol, Automatics with M271 Engines.

Pretty sure it's the wrong MB spec for an M271.
229.5 or 229.51 is the correct spec.

You'll probably find in the owners manual that 229.1 is also suitable for your 124.

I’ve got two barrels of 20L Mannol oil in the garage . One in 229.5 for the CLK and the other 229.51 for the E class .
They were so cheap on eBay I couldn’t not buy them

Yes but 229.51 can also be used in petrol.
229.51 has a different additive pack which makes it DPF friendly and also higher detergent level to hold diesel combustion byproducts in suspension.
