Is that a straight six or a vee?? Personally I would struggle to do a straight six in a day, usually booking the car in for at least two. This takes account of the fact that I will always get the head skimmed to true, and my local friendly machine shop don't know the meaning of the phrase "hurry up!". I can't complain as their job is always of top quality!!

Vee six obviously has two heads, so unless you plan on just doing one, it is even more work!!

£700 - £800 at an independent, using genuine parts and new head bolts.

Quite likely to be an issue with the water pump, IMO

I have just had my 320TE done - 10 hours plus head skim, head bolts, and head set.

I think you will find a water pump change on the 104 engine is something like 6 hours shop time plus cost of pump (approx £200 genuine) so not cheap BUT will last another 14 years if done properly and proper Mercedes coolant used.

After a run any water pump leak could be found by feeling under the pump at the front, they all go at some point in life, mine failed at 20k miles
