hi,can anybody please confirm what the differences are in the headlight units on a w202,i have a w reg c180 which has 2 different headlights fitted one has the fog light bulb in the lens next to the grill which i think is the early type and then the other one has the main beam in the lens by the grill which is the later type,the back of the early one just has one big bulb holder cover whereas the late one has 2 seperate black covers,so just to confirm should i have main beam by the grill or fog light by the grill.sorry if this is abit long winded.

does your car have the foglights set into the bumper at the front? if not, my guess would be that the one without the foglight is from a pre facelift base (classic or esprit) model, or has come from an AMG car with the foglights in the bumper. I could be wrong though

Hi,
Early 202 headlight has two covers on the back, later one and the Xenon version have two round covers, both headlights have a foglight function in them regardless whether the car has fog lights in the bumper. If the car does have foglights in the bumper (incidently AMG models, or factory specced AMG body kit cars were the only factory built cars to have bumper mounted fog lights) The fog light function is taken from the headlight to the bumper fog by the means of an adapter loom which plugs into the headlight in between the main headlight plug and the headlight unit itself.
If you have a combination of an early and a late headlight and you are changing back to both late ones do check the same bulb lights up at each function on the lights, and IIRC you will have to change the lower body coloured trim panel immediately below the headlight as I believe these were different between the headlight types.
If you have any issues with regard to which bulb does what between the early and late headlight then I can check for you as one of my cars is an early type and the other is a late type though it is a Xenon type.

AMG

I know technically you dont use foglights with main beam but with the AMG is it then possible to have 4x55W bulbs/side illuminated at once total of nearly 40Amps or does one foglight override the other

55watt bulbs pull 4 amps each

12x4,58=55

4.58x8=36.64 ie nearly 40 Amps

It does not matter much but I just could not see where one could have 8 lamps on.

To be exact on this the car runs at 13.8 volt and that equals 3.9855072 amps or near enough 4 amp

Yes I know its splitting hairs Malc but the 202 has 3 bulbs in the main headlight dip, main beam and a fog which can be all switched on at once then the AMG has bumper fog aswell which piggy backs off the headlight connector so my query was whether the bumper fog overrides the headlight one and if not the avove amp draw

Surely you cannot have the main and dipped at the same time so 6 lamps possible in this case

As I understand things the max legal light from the front is 55 watt, 2 on makes 110watt per side.

dip

I know twin filament setups only have dip or main beam on at once due to heat buildup but the cars ive had with separate bulbs for both are both lit on full beam then the front fogs can be lit whether on full or dip

Many thanks for that,if you could check your lights I would be grateful,mine is set up as follows,early type is dipped bulb at top,main at bottom and fog next to grille,late type is dipped at top,fog at bottom and main next to grille.
