Hello Everyone,
I'm new and writing from Malaysia. Beginning about 3 months ago, my car starting experiencing a strange and unpleasant engine problem: As I am driving, without any warning, the engine will cutout, buck and then stall. However, it swill start again immediately and I can continue driving. In the beginning it occurred once in a while. Soon every short trip I took became a frightening experience because of the stalling; twice, the car at the back of me almost knocked into me!
My mechanic at first thought it was an ignition related problem and changed the plugs, disributor cap, rotor arm etc. That did not make any difference.
Next he changed the fuel filter (which was 2 years old), fuel pump and the accumulator next to the fuel pump. The old fuel filter was very dirty since quite a bit of sediment came out of its inlet. He has checked the fuel pump relay and says it is okay. At first, I noticed considerable improvement especially with a full tank of petrol. But as the tank became half empty the problem stared recurring again. Every time the car stalls, I have no problem restarting the car. There appears to be no pattern in the number of stalls.
Could it be due to a dirty fuel tank with sediment in it? Or is it a problem with the fuel injection system? I need advice as my mechanic appears to come from the "trial-and-error" school of thougt!
Thanks from sunny Malaysia

OVP?

The Over Voltage Protection relay (aka OVP) has also been known to cause such problems.

I had the same stalling problem with my 190e.

Swapped out the fuel pump relay (FPR) and OVP relay and the problem just disappeared.I don't know which of these 2 components solved the problem but I wanted them swapped out anyway.

My analysis however seems to tell me that if the FPR is faulty, the car would not restart.Unless it is intermittent.

A faulty OVP may cause the engine to die, but still be able to restart immediately.

Check your OVP relay.

It's a red relay with 2 fuses on the top of it.Check that the fuses are not blown.

If your OVP relay is black in colour with only 1 fuse on the top of it, it is the older type.Update it to the red one with 2 fuses.

Btw, what variant of the 190e do you drive, and what year?
