After 3 weeks out of action during a holiday my 560 SEC cut out after driving half a mile. It started again easily and was then OK. It has now cut out again twice. Both times it has been after a short drive, a stop of 2 hours, and then a warm restart. It cuts out after about half a mile, restarts easily, and then runs fine.
Is there a an enrichment device which is cutting out too early, or is it a fault in the fuel delivery.

When the car dies, does the rev counter IMMEDIATELY fall to zero, or does it die slowly ?

If it dies immediately, then it is an ignition problem. If slowly, then it's a fuel problem.

I think it could be either one of three things - the fuel pump relay, the OVP relay or the CIS-KE relay.

If the car is easy to restart, then it's not a rich fuel condition etc,as then it would take time to re-start.

I'd check the distributor rotor to make sure it has not burnt and making a poor contact - always fit OEM rotors, the replicas are prone to burning out and leaving you stranded. Also check there is no vapour/condensation build-up in the distributor cap, which would also cause stalling. Clean out the cap and spray with damp start.

I'd reccomend cleaning the contacts on the fuel pump relay and OVP relay - both these relays are located externally to the fusebox on late W126 cars, which makes them prone to dirt and corrosion on the contacts. The OVP relay is midwaybetween fusebox and battery, silver with a red or black plastic top. It's held in by a small bolt, which when removed will allow you to lif tout relay and clean.

The fuel pump relay is just by the brake booster (has the words *zyl and kickdown printed on it). Clean up the contacts on this too.

The CIS relay is loacted down in the passenger footwell - but I'd leave this alone.

It's really going to need a step-by-step diagnosis of the above components with the appropriate electronic devices - but the above may give you some clue as to what's causing it.
