My '92 low mileage 230TE Auto is being odd! When I apply even a small amount of accelerator (especially at low speeds) the car continues to accelerate even if I ease off. It is therefore almost impossible to drive at a steady 10mph - it just keep speeding up until I virtually lift off the padal all the way. Anyone got any ideas?? It make city driving hard work as I'm constantly having to brake, then accalerate again. Also, the accalerator seems to kick in when only a few millimeters depressed - is this connected to other problem or does the cable just need adjusting?? Would really appreciate any ideas.

Blast the throttle control area by the air-intake with WD40 and that'll almost certainly fix it. See pic below.

From my motor cycling memories.......

Sticking throttle cable, either remove and lubricate or replace.

Broken throttle return spring......check it but I dont know where it is.

Sticking mechanis or damaged mechanism as Mike has shown.
