I have a 2 and a half year old E320 CDI, bought from new. Its done just under 8000 miles (Yes 8000!!!) and there is still 6 months of warranty left to run. Whilst driving the car the other day I noticed, rust has started to form on the motor arms that power the washer blades (All the motors). It's not a lot, but over the last couple of weeks it's becoming more noticeable.

I had a quick look under the bonnet as well and have now found that one of the hydraulic push rods that hold the bonnet up is also starting to rust. There is a right angle bracket just to the right of the radiator that holds a bunch of wires together, this has almost completely corroded. The 3 pulleys thats connected to the fan belt are starting to rust as well and also part of the Engine is showing signs of corrosion.

I took the car to the Mercedes dealership and showed them the problem, but was told that it was surface rust and because it doesn't affect the performance of the parts, it's not covered under warranty. When I asked what I should do about the rust, I was told to get some sand paper and sand it down and paint over the top of it.

The car cost me over 40000 pounds when I bought it and I'm disgusted with the response. The view from Mercedes is that the rusting is normal and there is nothing they can do.

I have logged a complaint with the head office and have had another chat with the same dealership, but their stance is the same.

What can I do.....????

Your help is appreciated....

Can you post some photos?
A bit of surface corrosion is normal on some minor (non structural) parts, though mine is 18 months old and I can't say I've even noticed any of that.
There is a fair bit on areas like control arms and suspension joints as well as heat affected areas but again this is perfectly normal. A bit of surface rust is to be expected on any unpainted parts that are open to the weather, but a few spots of the brown stuff is a long way from structural weakness which is still probably 15 years away.

Post a couple of photos and we can compare to our own and give you a view.
