AARH! I turned the ignition key on my '85 380SL last night. The engine turned as usual and then I heard a loud bang and the engine died. I looked under the bonnet and (you can imagine my horror) there was a hole in the camshaft casing above the timing chain. Does anyone know:

- Is my engine completely ruined bearing in mind I had just started the car?

- Looking through the hole, it looks like I have a duplex chain and it looks like it is still in place? Is it possible it could have just jumped?

- The car (which I bought in January) only had 62K (I have MOTs to prove) and I had just had it serviced. My understanding was that duplex chains last forever ehich is one of the reasons I bought the car

- What am I looking at in terms of repair? I have one small child and another one on the way so I need the extra expense like a hole in the head!. I havent go the time or the expertise to do it myself.

- Can anyone recommend a good specialist around Weybridge (Surrey)

Your Mercedes
1999 SL500
I cant vouch for this firm personally but my next door neighbour swears by them having had a considerable amount of work done by them. They specialise in BMW & Mercedes. They have two branches, one up the road from you in Shepperton and the other in Ashford, so they're probably your most local Mercedes independant in any event & probably worth a telephone call if nothing else.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Timing chain '85 107 380SL

In case anyone is interested- plastic guide (probably around £2.00) within the timing chain assembly broke and the chain jumped. the result is my engine is now being rebuilt. Warning to look out for is
a rattling sound that lasts 1-2 seconds when you start the engine.
