Guys,

I have a 1991 230e Auto. Recently I noticed that, whilst driving, it would develop a bad missfire and cut out. After leaving it for a while, it would sometimes be OK..

However, it is now immobile.

It starts and revs fine in neutral. It is fine in reverse, but when you put it into drive it coughs, splutters and just dies!

Any thoughts would be much welcomed.

Were they not all injection? My 88 one was.

Anyway, I would suggest the fuel pump relay.

My 190 used to do this Misfired badly especially when wet.
This is what i found
Remove the black protective cover over the ignition coil and check that the wiring connections for the low tension circuit (ring terminals bolted on ether side of the coil) are not to close to the centre connection HT Lead if they are loosen the bolts and turn the connector away from the HT Lead.
on my car the HT lead was tracking across to the low tension side even left burn marks and it misfired really badly to the point it was undrivible.
done the above and it has not missed a beat since, i also left that cover of the coil as i think it traps moisture under it and cause more bad than good :) :D

This gets hard sometimes as the data base gives info on both. If its a car that I am not that conversant with I have know way of knowing.
