I would like to buy a SL, but would like some guidance on what to look out for. My budget is up to £10,000, but would prefer to pay less.

I am worried about the running costs, like the MPG, insurance, repairs and serving.
Are there any models would be betters? (like 280, 350. 450 etc)
Are there any years to go for? (like change of body shape)

If you have any information that may help I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Peter

I would say your best option conserning running costs would be a R107 280SL or 300SL. The 300SL is probably the better choice if you can pick one up for the right money, but as with all older Mercedes condition and history are more important than year and mileage.

You are certainly looking at a R107 for the budget you mention. It is possible you could find a W113 'Pagoda' (earlier model) but it would be a restoration case. I agree entirely with heckflosse that condition and history are more important than mileage - but I wouldn't restrict yourself to a 280 or 300 (straight sixes); you may find a reasonable V8. Be warned that top condition examples will come in at more than £10k, but you should find a pretty fair example - probably pre-85 when there was a change of engine range, wheels and a few other details.

There have been several past posts on what to look out for - a search on 107 ought to turn up quite a few.

Let us know how you get on.
