We've just bought a 1998 200SLK but I cant find an insurance company on the planet that recognises the car on their database!

The car has been HPied, we've spoken to the DVLA and Mercedes Benz locally who have run the chassis number through their computer and all is fine. Car has 2 previous owners who have presumably insured it and all the MOTs & tax is in order.

The only problem seems to be that there is no model type info on the V5 & no-one seems to be able to help. There doesn't appear to be an ABI no for a straight Mercedes 200SLK and am beginning to wonder if there is such a thing pre 2000 tho the local Mercedes dealer tells me there is and this is no a kompressor. All insurances come up with either 2.3 or 200K no straight 200!!

We really are at our wits end ... can anyone throw any light? Help would be seriously appreciated.

thank you

The 170 200SLK was only made in the 435 version. And that is your car, that can be seen by the Chassis number and VIN

The K version only came as a 170444 and 170445

Thank you so much, I can't tell you how many hours I've spent on the phone to DVLA, mercedes & insurance companies. Now we know it is what it says on the V5.

Can you suggest any way we can get an insurance company to recognise it?

thanks again for your help

Just checked the VIN on the V5 with the car and there is an error on the V5, one of the numbers should be a letter. This has come up with all the info on the link you've suggested.

I did try the mercedes insurance link on the top of this page but again there was no choice for SLK200.Putting the car reg in only gave us the CLK and without the reg no there was still not choice for straight 200 only 200K.

As my pm the car is an import and sold in malaysia, it has LHD head lamps. This must be stated on the V5 that it is an import
