As the ESP light has been on I would have a guess it’s not getting correct signals from the wheel speed sensors, it may also explain things feeling very jerky as the ABS is grabbing.
That said your best route here is get it to an independent specialist with STAR to read the codes and see what’s being thrown, also try giving the battery a good charge as Mercs really don’t like low voltages when starting

Before throwing money at it get it on a decent MB specific code reader. Check live data from all 4 ABS sensors and go from there.

Sure there is, you have just been advised by a few,,,1st course of action,,,you need to get it scanned, and they are trying hard to help you, even trying to put you in touch with members or indys who are located near you. With modern cars,,,no mechanic can pull a solution out of thin air..based on the symptom's you ( or anyone else with a problem ) describe, they can form an opinion on what might be the problem, and propose a possible solution, but modern cars are highly computerised so the OBD scan is the way to go.

It could be many things. Get codes read so you don't throw money away guessing what it might be.

So its a fairly safe assumption that what he does not know about MB (or more specifically, MB problems ) is not worth knowing, And he is not the only one.
