On a V reg C280 V6.....I drive for so long and this come...it has a small oil can and the letters "HI"...then my trip and main miles all dissapear!, I took it the guy I got it from and said there's to much oil in it, is this right.

I did a search and seemingly this is what happens.....

I also have/had grey oily gundge inside the oil filler cap, and thought the worst, but had my mind put at rest from...1)...the guy Iv'e for nearly 7 yr's and 2) again the dealer I got it from....because it had been sitting in the forecourt few nearly two month's it was condensation and a the breather needing cleaned (which should have been done when they were checking it....THEN road tested it!!!)

The oil level sensor on my E320CDi is very sensitive to 0.5 litre above maximum. I had to do a lot of mileage over the Christmas period and checked and topped up the oil in the engine.

I experienced the same overfill message as yourself which can be cancelled with the reset button on the instrument binnacle. I wasn't overly concerned as I knew how much uil I had added and the car is having a B service next week.

I will tell the garage not to fill above the dipstick max when it goes in (serviced by my local garage).

It's useful to find out the max fill quantity of oil (mine is 7.5l) for future reference

Obviously it's the engine but what about the auto box if it's overfilled is it the same warning you get in the dash, just wondering, thanks.

I'm pretty sure if yours is an auto that the G/Box is sealed for life, mine is. The only way of checking the oil is to remove a plug on the transmission casing and purchase a dipstick from the dealer to check.

I don't think the issue with the autobox is whether there is too much oil, more whether it requires topping up through leakage. Worth keeping an eye out for tell tale leaks.

Regardless of MBs policy of sealing the units for life I will make sure that the autobox gets a filter and oil change before the mileage gets to 60K

How do you remove the plug from the casing, and how much is this dip stick you get from MB, oh and is it hard to do.

as far as I know there is no overfill/low oil warning for the autobox, the seal you need to snap off is the one at the top of the filler tube. Mercedes will sell you a new cap and a workshop dipstick to check the level. You mustn't leave this in like a normal one. I think the cost is about £15

If the car has done more than 40k miles then it's worth getting the fluid and filter changed as part of your routine maintainance. Please bear in mind you need to use the official MB transmission fluid which you'll need to buy from the dealers - it's not cheap but it's the only fluid that matches the MB specification

you can use castor oil if you like and it will very probably do the job for a few miles :)

The only transmission fluid which is up to full MB spec for the electronic boxes and recommended by Mercedes is sold by...........Mercedes.

Re changing the filter, you have dismantle a lot of paneling ,etc , and take the sump off. without the use of a lift it is almost impossible to clean the surounding area well enough.

On cars number model 163,170,202,203,208 and 210 there was are revision dated 01 02 01.

With gearbox number from 716.6 the filling capacity changed.
transmision 716.60/62 filling capacity changed from 1.5 to 1.2 liters
transmision 716.64/66 filling capacity changed from 1.8 to 1.5

The reason for the change makes the car change from 1st to 2nd when cold.
There have been quite a few postings here during the cold spell.
If you are the type of person who wishes to check the oil level, you can do so from under the car and check the oil level at the filler stand pipe. for the cars above the oil should be 10mm below the top.
If the gearbox is running OK, I would leave it alone, If you change the oil just fill to 10mm below top of filler. the filler screw torque is 35Nm

Regarding the type of oil, there is a list of alternatives, and this list is different for other countries its complcated due to the fact that some cars have different features, lock up, etc. If you change it you will probably only ever do it once, sinse the max you need is 1.8 liter, get the right MB one for your car
Your MB dealer will validate the above information.

I think that if you own a Mercedes with a manual gearbox your dealer will happily validate the information Malcolm has so carefully researched but being as the information is being offered to people with automatic gearboxes it's relevance is in doubt and probably won't actually cure the problem :)
