Ok, so i just got my 420 sel w126 back from getting a new windscreen to fix the terrible leaking and now it sits at 1300-1400rpm at idle. Hasn't been too much of a problem until today when doing the daily commute for the first time where i have to spend 16 miles riding the brake to stop the car tootling along at a min of 20mph (the traffic was definitely not going at 20mph!).

I know this is fairly common and hope it's a straightforward fix!

TIA :D

126 what a great car. Try the idle speed control valve it goes wrong on both Benz and BMW during the 126 era. If you remove the air filter casing, three 10mm nuts. towards the front top of the engine you will see an aluminium tube with two electrical wires going to it. Also two air pipes. Remove this and spray carb cleaner inside. If you shake it in a rotary fashion you should be able to hear in inner valve move left and right. Also if you give a direct 12v pos to one connector and ground to the other connector it should operate. When the car has been unused for some time this valve gets sticky.
