When my 1993 320 SL is started from cold the engine will change up at higher revs for the first mile or so. I am told this is to protect the cat ? Can this be cancelled in the ECU as I am worried about this feature in snow and ice.
How does this make a difference in snow & ice? Engine speed is related to road speed via gears and if the engine revs higher but the gearbox doesn't shift there's no nett difference, is there?
You can drive at high revs in a low gear or low revs in a high gear. I don't think the shape of the torque curve in a 320 is going to make enough difference to make one more tricky than another
You could always wait for it to warm up, but the handbook probably advises against that...
