I have a 98 e300 td auto avantgarde. The gearbox has 25% of oil in it.
How do I re fill ? Is it possible to fill down the tube where you check the level ? How much atf is required to bring up to 80% ? If my maths are anything to go by,would four litres bring it up to the mark ?

Pour in 1 liter at a time or less, the torque converter holds 3 liters

Dont forget to be very very clean, one bit of muck might ruin the transmission.

Does your car still move?
I think that it would stop moving with that much fluid loss, maybe the garage bloke meant it was 3/4 way down the max/min on the dipstick. If this is the case you will only need to add 1/2 a litre or less, Do not put too much in this will over pressurise the transmission and damage it.

I'll ask the obvious here, how do you know your transmission has lost 75% of it's oil? even if you have a dipstick in your posession it would'nt tell you your box was only 25% full

atf capacities

I'd be more worried about where the 75% went to.

Thanks for your reply. The car has done 290000kms.from my queries to MB garages, they all tell me the gearbox never needs a top up !I have checked all the service bills etc going back ten years, and not once have they checked or added any atf to this motor. I have done what the threads advise on checking the levels with the ' curtain wire " its way down near to 25 %.As you say 'where has it gone ' !

I would be inclined to have it read out at a MB or indie

The marks on the dipstick have no direct relation to the capacity of your transmission ie if the trans was half empty you would get no reading whatsoever on the dipstick. In reality the difference between high and low on either temperature scale on the dipstick would probably be between 1 and 2 litres max whereas your transmission holds over 7 litres I would add 1/2 litre at atime and re-dip
P.S. At that mileage I would be changing the trans fluid and filter anyways as they are no longer considered sealed for life

They are wrong. The gearbox needs it's fluid changing regularly, every 30,000 miles or so.

I suggest you pull the three plastic undertrays off the underside of the car and start looking for leaks. The 2 pipes under the coolant radiator are a weakpoint.
