How do you take off the little cover/ seal that goes onto the auto gearbox filler tube. This has an inscription on it saying " mb workshop only "
It has a small red tab,but it looks as if it would break if you applied undue pressure ! Thanks.( MB e300 td auto 1998 )

The clip does break off and you get a new one, after you have checked the fluid level.

Yes it does break and thats the whole idea of it, so they know (MB Dealer) its been opened. But it is only a cap and there is no dipstick. You have to buy this for yourself. Dealers and indies have all the dipsticks for different transmissions in the special tool store. Buy one for yourself and its a good investment. One question, is your car still in warranty? If so, its not a good idea to remove this cap. Check the warrenty paperwork first;)

This cap is not put there so that MB know that its been opened, as the replacement cap is identical to the one that came off.

The cap is on there in the first place as it is a non normal service item. though the rules have been changed regarding the changing of the fluid since this car was built, the cap remains as dip sticks are no longer provided.

Not a valid point eric, what does the year have to do with it,the guy did say 1998 and as I said the old cap is identical to the new one. I am surprised that you do not know when this procedure started.

why dont they...

As merc now accept that this sealed for life thing is no longer valid why dont they provide a dipstick to replace the breakable seal or give us a dipstick with the replacement seal so we can check it? it would seem a sensible thing to do.

I would suggest that you get the seal before you break the existing one in any event

I think it is all down to costing, a plastic cap cost pence where as a dip stick is a few pounds. I have not got one for the engine and I hate that.

Twist (break) off the small red tab and then use a very thin screwdriver (or similar) to push the remaining 'blade' of the seal downwards to remove it........the cover will then pull off
You dont have to buy a new seal as you can still re-use the 'blade' part of the seal to lock the cap onto the dip-tube...just re-insert the blade from above and you will hear it 'click' into place..(as i have done)....which is handy for future atf level checks when to remove it again you just push it downwards (as previously described) No point in removing the cover untill you posses the special dipstick which costs about £25...........be aware that the dipstick handle will protrude from the dip-tube by about 12 inches when you are checking the level..this is normal and, amongst other reasons, will ensure that you replace the cover/locking tab rather than attempt to leave a dipstick in place.

Aliexpress will sell new caps and a dipstick for $25, while stealerships want $75. Have a 12VDC pump to pump out gear box oil vi dip stick which stank and was black as two stealerships did not change oil at 60k km and 120k km. Must have laser thermometer to measure level at 80 degrees, so become a Youtube mechanic!

It certainly is an old thread!!

You need to change the transmission fluid filter when you are changing the fluid.
That entails taking off the transmission sump pan.
There are many videos showing how to do that.
