2 Clips on the front of the fan shroud that hold it on.

Mine was leaking so badly it was spraying over the belt and you could smell it when driving.

I think this is what whirralguy is describing.

The white safety clip that needs to be pushed in. Please correct me if i'm wrong.
Also being completely green on MBs would somebody please name the part shown that says Bosch on it? Thanks.

The part with Bosch on it?
Look suspiciously like the common rail to me.
And yes - the white clip is pushed inwards to release, not pulled outwards.

Thanks for that, didn't have that on my previous diesels. I was also asking because as I've shown on another thread, I've found instructions fro removing my glowplugs and it suggests loosen two bolts that hold this and to remove the pipe connectors as mentioned above. I could not see the reason for either.

Had this problem with my CDI270. It was taking firing first turn then needing 4 - 5 long cranks to run. Also there was a smell of diesel drifting into the cab at low speeds. Very easy to replace the top hose (fuel filter to plastic box at front of engine). 15 minute job and I would not call myself a keen mech. Main dealer hose cost £23 - plus one of their guys gave me advice on fitting it. Main point was to let the fuel system depressurize. Fitting: I just broke the black arms off on the old one coz I didn't want to mess around and am short of time. New one went on easy though I eased off another right side hose to make it easy - used screwdrivers as the white clip is ok to put them on but not to get them off in my thinking.
The vehicle had been in a repair shop for a whole day with them trying to recreate the starting failure - they were convinced it was the glow plugs needing replacing at £40 each (despite my giving them the text and photos off this thread - undesired info I guess - though I did my best to not appear a clever dick). Wanted to charge me £70 for diagnostic check - which showed no codes. Picked up the car as I needed it then took the rather radical step of opening the bonnet with it running - fuel was cascading out of the fuel line end over the front of the engine. A humble reminder for me that looking under the bonnet is still a basic step in diagnosing problems..

About to attempt changing the fuel lines on my 220 CDi as I've noticed that the area below the HP pump is getting slightly damp. Have also had a a starting problems a couple of times but when started the engine runs smoothly.

How do you depressurize the fuel system? Is there a valve somewhre that needs opening?

The high pressure lines or the low pressure lines?

to be honest, they both dont require depressuring I belive. (well I didnt when I did mine, and I didnt leak any fuel)

So, do you just start disconnecting the lines and let the fuel leak out - and mop it up with an old rag?

I had such a tiny amount of fuel on the hp lines It didnt really matter (At least from the rail to the injectors), havent done the hp pump, but I would just hold an old rag near it, its not going to be a vast amount.

Thanks for the information Alexander.

From what I've gathered from this forum, the fuel line from the HP pump to the rail is a PITA to replace. I've still to diagnose which line is leaking or even if the pump itself it leaking! I'll have to have a look at it this weekend

They defo are, although if you had a hp line leaking I think you would know about! It wouldnt be a slow leak.

If the bottom of the pump is damp its probably the low pressure lines or the o-rings on them. It could be the pump seals though...

The internal seals, yes. But when they fail, I understand that they leak into the sump rather than externally. (dont quote me on that though)

It depends on which seal leaks... some leak outside some inside.
