Water pump change

Just to say glad I read this first. It made the whole job straightforward and much easier than I thought. Thanks

Water pump metal particles

1997 C230 4 cyl 94000 KM's
Pulled my water pump off this AM, found metal particles under the pulley.
Belt is badly burned and melted onto the pulleys.
Pump bearing is VERY worn out, looks like it scraped the front of the block.
Very smooth scrapes and I saw no particles.
Got it all cleaned up and will bolt on new pump tommoro.

Should I be worried about metal particled ionside the block?
Is there a special way to flush the block/rad?

Thanks,

Not really, as most of it will collect in the bottom of the radiator. tbh if you have metal bits in the coolant system i'd undo the drain plug on the rad and drain it out then flush it with a hosepipe in the expansion tank to get all the detritus out. ive just done this job on my C250TD and it took longer due to a viscous coupling bolt rounding, and due to the bigger engine. that had metal bits and i just flushed the coolant system. this would make the job take longer though!

yeah the belts are cheaper than the dayco ones at GSF or similar.

there are also other random bits too that work out cheaper but its pot luck mostly.

check there is not an air lock by running the car up to temperature with the rad cap off and the heater on full blow, also give the big pipes a good squeeze periodically while the car is heating up. if there is still a problem then it might be the heater valve. the only time ive had problems with the heater not working properly has been to do with airlocks.

if it takes ages to get warm then the thermostat is goosed. if not, then i would say it is the heater control valve.

Would anyone know by any chance, if changing the Water Pump on a 2002 S210 E220 Cdi, is similar to the petrol engined model in this thread, as Ive just bought said car with Leaky Pump and managed to drive it home yesterday 148 very tense miles, so I feel that seeing as it got me home without any need to call the breakdown People, it deserves a New Water Pump ASAP.

Anyone's help or advice would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Terry.

the diesel is comparable, but it wont be as easy as this because of the space issues. it will be in a similar place though, so i would recomment doing it. you will probably need to remove some plastic panels and you may need some torx bits but otherwise i don't see it being too difficult.
