Hi, I've just bought this car, it has 114k on the clock, has a couple of probs and Im far from a mechanic so I'll explain the probs as best I can!

The first one I think is pretty straight forward. One of the tappets is clattering like hell, so the solution i would imagine would be replace the tappet?

Second one: I've been told by the previous owner that sometimes the supercharger does its thing and sometimes not. Hmmm....he thinks which makes sense that its related to a plastic valve type of thing thats connects to the inlet manifold via a thin piece of vacuum hose. The hose is missing. I put a spare bit on that I had and it ran as though it was misfiring. So I took it off and it ran better. It also has a low revs misfire and uneven idle which improves as it warms up.

Now, the car has been sat for 6 months with a flat battery and has half a tank of old fuel in it which can't help matters.

But it's a lovely car and I'd love to be able to get it up to scratch and keep it rather than doing my usual hot brick thing.

So a few things to try and eliminate would be great as I haven't got a clue. I'm not sure if the problems are related or seperate issues. The engine seems dry and the oil nice and clean.

Would a set of plugs help?

Does the tappet just make an annoying noise or does it need changed asap?

What is that valve thing all about? It connects to the inlet manifold as far as I can tell and looks like a recirculating dump valve on a turbo car. It has an outlet for a small hose and what looks like an outlet for a bigger one on the bottom but I can't see where it would connect too.

Any help appreciated as I'm demoralised with it all!
