The car is a 2001 E200 CDI automatic. It started nicely this morning but since then all attempts to get it into reverse (R) or drive (D) have failed. The selector is very very stiff. If I didn't know better I would have thought it is fixed and has never moved in the direction I have been trying to push it all morning. Somebody help me, please.

The chances are it is the brake light switch that has failed, they are very cheap and easy to fit, it is over the brake pedal

Television, the brake light switch seems to be working. I checked by standing at the rear of the car and havind the wife step on the brake pedal. The lights came on and off as they should do. Or am I displaying my ignorance ? Don't know much about these things

The brake light switch is in 2 parts, the lamp circuit that is OK, it is the second part the operates the BAS that has failed, killing the speed signal, without this info the car cannot be driven

Thank you very much, Television. Had the electrician check the switch. The selector now moves to all the designated position. There is a new development though. I do not see the car move into 2nd gear or for that matter any higher gear. Moreover the car does not move at a speed beyond 60 km/h. It seems to have been limited through speedtronics. Tried freeing it by speedtronics. It tells me 'visit workshop'. Any ideas?

It seems to have gone into 'Limp' mode. Take it to a garage that has a diagnostic machine to tell you the fault.

Yes this is all to do with the speed sensor data missing
