I have a contact who can supply nearly new tyres in Southampton area plus another mobile chap who is very reasonable with fitting/repairing tyres.
The fitting guy is Liam from Fast-Tortoise. Mobile chap but very good and reasonable. The supplier is a bit of a backyard place however his stock of nearly new tyres is vast. And no he isn't dodgy (as far as I know) but does prefer cash only. He is a disabled foreign chap. PM me for more information.

His credentials are a bit iffy  :D Personally I wouldn't go near a second hand tyre  :)

As Andy - stay away from used tyres.
But appreciate you bringing this to the attention of the forum.

Quite laughable as we often purchase cars with used tyres .

At least you can see inside the others .

True, but you probably wouldn't buy the used car if it was significantly accident damaged, you've no idea how the car looked that had your "nearly new" tyres on.

Agreed, but there is often a reason why they become used tyre stock. They could easily be damaged tyres. On a used car it is an entirely different proposition, they are in use rather than rejected or salvaged or whatever :)

With used cars with used tyre the common issue is driving with punctures .

This totally inialates the inside tyre edge and is not seen .

With used tyres you always have to ask "Why were they taken off?"
With tyres fitted to a used vehicle it's a reasonable assumption the tyres are OK as they are still in use.

With both there's risks , hense the buoyant new tyre market .

I bought my first set of new tyres for 15 years as always purchased good used OEM one inch bigger alloys with tyres .

Still wouldn't touch a part worn tyre with a nine foot pole :) Tyres, and brakes, are the two most important elements of a car and I would not skimp on either :)

Right. Okay people. I get the message!!!! However in my current situation I Needed cheap tyres. This guy was recommended by another Mercedes driver who owns a marine engineering company nearby and who used to own a company doing fleet repairs on Mercedes-Benz cars. So I kinda trusted what he told me even though the chap when I first met him, looked Seriously dodgy. My first thoughts were ‘Pete recommended You?!!!’ However considering My financial situation it Was justified for now. Might not suit everyone but it did for me for now.

Its a very personal choice when it comes to tyres and each person has their own views. There is bound to be someone who will benefit from your post.

My old tyre dealer used to import them from Germany, many owners put new on when they change to winters and he always had a good stock of good quality part worns.

I’ve used part worn tyres and never had a bad one.

Absolutely!

I've bought and fitted used tyres before - never had any issues.
I just do a good inspection first and try to get reputable brands.

I have bourght used tyres off eBay for many years without any issues , mainly because money was tight . It was mainly winter tyres that I bourght , I would always try and get tyres with over 6mm of tread , and if possible confirm the build date on the tyrewall .
However since discovering Camskills and Tyreleader I've only bourght "new" . Tyreleader especially sells new tyres which have never been fitted but are 2-3 years old . I often buy good deals a year or so before I need them and store them in the garage .
The last 2 sets of winters I've bourght new , I paid just over £50 a tyre . At that price even eBay seconds can't compete .

Yes, I have used Camskill and Tyreleader, also Openeo. But the trouble is Tyre Fitting Shops have cottoned and now charge exorbitant fitting prices! £17-£23 not uncommon, whereas previously a tenner would suffice. I now put at least £15 onto whatever the price is online.
Like recently I needed a Hankook 205/55x16. Camskill £52.00 (I still need to pay to get them fitted - £17 = £69). My local Tyre Place, Abbey Tyres, ( https://www.google.com/search?q=abbey tyres&rlz=1C1ASRM_enGB548GB548&oq=abbey+tyres&aqs=chrome.0.69i59.4205j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&npsic=0&rflfq=1&rlha=0&rllag=50917441,-1276342,5884&tbm=lcl&rldimm=4157709635244167702&phdesc=7_Y1wtP0eeo&ved=2ahUKEwimzaTgy5PkAhUN-6QKHf-ZAfUQvS4wAHoECB4QIQ&rldoc=1&tbs=lrf:!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:10#rlfi=hd:;si:4157709635244167702,y,7_Y1wtP0eeo;mv:!1m2!1d50.9624892!2d-1.2151465!2m2!1d50.8723933!2d-1.337539!3m12!1m3!1d43704.0180599023!2d-1.27634275!3d50.91744125!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i357!2i417!4f13.1;tbs:lrf:!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:10 ) £66.00 Supplied and Fitted - no brainer really..... ;)

Yep , market forces :D ! My local general garage is still pretty cheap to fit , but you do have to factor in the costs . I'm normally taking in a set of 4 loose wheels which keeps the costs down because they don't need to remove and refit the wheels

My old tyre dealer used to import them from Germany, many owners put new on when they change to winters and he always had a good stock of good quality part worns.

I’ve used part worn tyres and never had a bad one.

More likely due to the fact it is illegal to put second hand parts on cars in Germany so they are useless to them. This is why there are lots of breakers yards on the dutch side of the border where it is not illegal.

The issue with the used tyre market in the UK is that all tyres are supposed to be checked to some quite high standards before sale. Unfortunately being x-rayed isn't one of them so the internal damage is never know (but would also then probably price them out of existence). They rarely are inspected properly, and probably unlikely that a back street yard will be doing it.

Part worn tyres must show the required E marking and have PART WORN embossed next to the BS marking in letters at least 4mm high.

The National Tyre Distributors Association NDTA funded trading standards to go and do spot checks on part worn tyres and found 98% to be non compliant with the regulations. Over 50% were found to be unsafe for road use. Now some may say that they were protecting their best interest of their members who supply new tyres, which they probably were, but the results were still pretty condemning.

As for the used car has unknown tyres, that is true, but the history of the car is better known, so slightly less risk. Personally I budget for replacing the tyres asap when I buy a car unless I am very sure of their history. Just part of the budget, but equally I tend to keep cars for quite a while so not much of a burden.
