I have posted a few treads all around a runing issue with my 2005 vito w639 , here is the story so far.
I was given the van with a blown engine looking at rebuild of old engine till I found a very low mileage engine on ebay , this engine came with everything, injectors turbo, gearbox it was ready to bolt straight in, while it was sat on the floor I did the injector washers ,new bolts new glow plugs, so in it went, and it fired up , the only thing is it will not rev past 3000 and smokes alot smells of diesel and feels like a missfire if you keep your foot to the floor for around 5 sec the smoke clears and will rev to around 4500 , I was looking at mercedes diagnostic tool to do a more indepth look into any fault codes and I noticed that some do injector programing so my question is do the injectors need programing to the ecu or not , they were labelled and replaced in the same location where they where removed from , any help would be grateful received

If the ECU is original and didn't come with the engine then yes.
1st the injector codes need to be entered into the ECU relevant to each cylinder.
Then when running well there are zero calibrations for both tick over and running, they will improve smoothness but the engine should run well enough w/o.

I believe the initial codes can be entered via some of the more basic readers, but would be surprised if the zero cal's could be done w/o Star.

Tbh I would expect a good reader to check running and any codes would be greatly beneficial, to avoid red herring goose chases.
Do gooses actually like red herrings?

Other parameters that may be out,
EGR,
turbo,
MAF,
throttle body.
Those are initial thoughts, there may be others that require initial set up.

I wouldn't expect the parameters to be far out but the engine isn't likely to running best until an extended Star session rights things.

Where are you?

There is MercServe in Basford and also MB Centre in Nottingham, both decent reputable specialist who may be able to help solve your issue.

Not changed benz injectors, but I often find injectors will run fine on existing map. Just better when coded in.

Just an update , got the injectors coded in , the smoking has stopped but also found that the turbo boost control valve is losing some of the vacuum, so the turbo actuator is not full closing so some of the boost was being lost, it now seems to be OK, but a road test should confirm, when moving it around at work now it wants to spin the wheels , very happy.

When you program in the injector characterisation codes existing Zero Fuel Corrections get reset.
ZFC is learnt during overrun, so it will be adapting already. These are the long term term adaptions to compensate for drift over injector life.
