This time while on a short journey the bumpy gear change between first and second is seemingly normal until it gets up to normal running temperature then is fine. However today it felt like the transmission was trying to go into reverse gear while driving forward at 20 mph which resulted in a fierce shake and vibration.
I have no idea what is happening to this car but anything to go wrong and cause much heartache and expense seems to be normal.

I feel for you, I sometimes think I've the "reverse midas touch" where everything I touch turns to a much bigger (£££) job.

Thank you Rus.
I'm afraid this car is fast becoming the worst car for things going wrong. And to think my last 2 s211's were very good.
I guess there are Friday built cars with every maker :(

I have that touch too.
A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with a bad earth. Went to open the bonnet. No way. Cable was too knackered and wouldn't release the drivers side catch.
Jack up the car to get to the catch from underneath. Watched as the jack went up and the car stayed put.
Eventually got the car in the air and crawled underneath to notice both front tyres were knackered on the inside edge.
So from a fix that should have taken 10 minutes tops and been virtually free we get to two new tyres, a sill repair and new bonnet cable. FFS ....

Glad it is just small repairable things on your E Class Alistair, mine is making it difficult to diagnose

Sounds like a clear out is in order and another more reliable one(or more) to join the fleet.

Shouldn't that be Freitag?.....

If it carries on like it is it wont be fit for that either :(

Oh yes I would love to get something far less expensive to run, but I just seem to love the thing, Lord knows why o_O
My neighbour has just sold his 13 plate M5 and bought a CLS, not sure what model or year but will find out when he returns home from the window tinted place
My neighbours wife had a 07 plate 350CLS which ended up having a few issues so they sold it and bought a 17 plate cough cough......530d Estate which is basically his wife's car. Though I heard yesterday that she now wants an Audi!!........I am going to have to have strong words to her to get her focused on how evil she is becoming

68 plate CLS 350d 4matic with 13k, it's fitted with a straight 6 which surprise me.
Lovely car :)

Treated the Money Pit to a £5 wash yesterday and it repays in a starting to slip transmission issue......Really!
I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and order a transmission dipstick tomorrow so I can make sure it's got enough fluid in.
It's only just had a transmission service

You can get them off ebay.
Dealers are reluctant to sell official workshop tools to the public unless you are friendly with the parts dept.
Thanks mioba, looks like an ebay purchase is eminent :)

I have been having a look for a dip stick for the E Class and there seems to be 2 different lengths for the 722.6 1200mm and a 920mm version.
EWould my 2005 E Class 320cdi have this transmission?
Many thanks in advance.
