In the process of putting one together on my w124 - would've been ready now but a bloke on ebay let me down so still waiting for a heat exchanger.

How easy they are to fit all depends on access around the fuel pumps and filters etc.

I take it yours is a non-CDI engine?

How much is the ATG kit?

the engine bay is pretty tight, but the pumps are on the right where there ismore space. yeah not a CDI, i'm not sure what the number for it is but its the older 2.9 turbo engine. the ATG kit is about £400 including vat £360 without. includes tank, heat exchanger, 2 3 way solendoid valves quick purge timer and alarm, switches, hoses afew in line filters and some other crap i can't remmeber. sold on www.dieselveg.com

Just had a look at the kit, not too bad for the money. But I would still price up the individual components first.

I honestly think that those electric heaters are useless, will just put extra load on your alternator and battery.

What electric heaters? you mean the silly glow plug in the fuel line ones? I don;t know eneough about all this stuff to reliably price up all the stuff individually, unless it is all on their site, inwhich case iw ould've thought they wouldn;t bother jackinthe price up...probably cheaper due to a sort of bulk order.

Just read some of th eother thread, te kit I am looking at heats th eoil with a heat exchanger, using the coolant to heat th eoil...no dodgy glow plug heaters involved.

I thought that kit came with a (silly) glowplug heater as well as the heat exchanger?

Hey man, if you're happy with the price (and of course the convenience) of the kit then by all means crack on, it certainly seems to be good quality stuff.

I'm just too much of a tight arse! :)

p120801.jpg

that is a pic of the kit, the glow plug heater is mentioned in description but not shown in the picture but i guess i can jsut not fit it and everything will be fine, the heat exchanger should be enough, shouldnlt it?
I ran my old Vauxhall van on a blend of oil diesle and petrol and it went ok but the sprinter cost me a fair bit more and i plan on running it for a long time so £430 to convert doesn;t seem like much.

How import is it to anounce it to the insurers? I read in another thread all kits ecept the smart veg are technically illegal because they don;t have some safety check, can i get it checked by some sort of engineer or something and have it approved? How's it work?

Is that maybe a glowplug sticking out of the bottom of on of the switchover valves?
They are useless anyway, you don't switch over till the engine is up to temp anyway, so the HE is spot on. Even if you had a really powerful electric heater, any heat it imparted in the oil would be instantly absorbed by the huge lump of cold metal it's going in to.

These engines are THE BEST for running veg, no argument.

As for insurance, hmmm, something I'd thought about but not done anything about yet. If you can find one that understands what you mean by 'veg oil conversion', I think they will treat it similarly to LPG conversions and want it 'professionally' installed. :( Even though a tank of veg oil is a little bit safer than a pressurised tin of propane! Phone round a few, be a bit coy though!

The smart veg kit isn;t much more I would consider getting it, apart from the safety stadards it conforms to, why else is it better? the pipe in pipe heat exchanger seems a bit ...different.
