I have to agree with you though, my clk was a bit ****e in the last lot of snow we had. I still got where I needed to be but it was all too easy to get the ESP kicking in as soon as I tried to move. A light back end, coupled with 255 tyres on the rear cant have helped the situation much.

Also the fact that i was reversing out of a parking bay onto a side road covered in ice and slow and one which was on a uphill grad. as you can imagine it just wanted to spin me around..........

I already said i was done with it - he always has something else to say - he told me to pm him so i told him to grow up and get a life - didnt throw my toys out of the pram - even invited him back into a civil conversation.........
I was S-A-M and still am. but his vile pm was sent before my invitation and his subsequent pm [2 no.] was sent after.
I could copy and paste both pm's into a reply but why should I sink to such cowardly depths.
I believe that I'm bigger and better than that.
Good evening and safe driving to all.

I guess I am lucky in that I have to use public transport for work as I work in central London so my car stays parked on my drive Monday to Friday (how do I still clock up 12k miles PA?)

But I was quite disappointed with the lack of grip I experienced, more so as its rock solid in the wet and dry.

Thats the same feeling i had - i expected a little more grip than i actually got.
I have been brought up with motorsport , done karting , rallying , off roading , grass track racing , so know what to do when a car misbehaves - but i was pretty screwed this morning.........

lol it certainly did - the more worrying thing though was as i tried to get some traction the car just started sliding towards the car next to me and i basically ended up across the back of the parked car and stuck , it had a lovely tow bar which was about 6" away from my door.............thank goodness for the couple of chaps passing by at the time.

I’m also guilty of thinking winter tyres and gentle driving would be enough to drive about my local country roads – and yes, OK it has worked – to a point.
I only bought some because I remember the problems I had in Feb.

Winter tyres were fitted in November on the first day of snow, not cheap, but cheaper then being called unreliable by your employer.
I totally understand that it’s not worth everyone having winter tyres if you don’t do many miles. If you get caught out in summer rubbers in the snow I don’t see why you should be considered any less of a motorist. Not every one can shell out on another set of rims AND rubbers. Although snow socks are effective and cheaper.
I love RWD, but I’m sorry to have to agree with some others on here, they will not always get you moving on ice. Fresh SNOW is fine, once the ICE forms sometimes its simply game over.
RWD on a dry/wet road is better the FWD, because the weight shifts, ONCE MOVING, to the rear, and the front goes light.
On Snow and Ice, FWD already has the weight on the front wheels (engine?), and as no one will be making racing starts in the Snow or Ice, the weight will not shift to the rear. The weight stays in the front, and away you creep.
Anyway, on a slight uphill at a junction I had to stop. I was in Winter mode on the auto box. Again on real winter tyres, All I did was lift off the brake peddle and the wheels started to spin on tick over.
Of course solved by reversing and taking a run up.

If we want to talk about hazards, lets talk the cocky twats who think they can drive in Ice BETTER THEN EVERYONE ELSE. Who think, that because they have a 4x4, or have super trooper tyres they can STOP better then everyone else, therefore sit up MY arse, because I am doing 5mph below the speed limit and keeping 6 cars distance. The cocky tail gaiters - They are the real hazards.

i usually fill up my car to the maxwhen there is a quarter or less of a tank full left. Would a full tank and 4 bags of cement in the back make any diff to the grip that would be easily noticeable?

Totally agree, along with the idiots that don't assess the risk before taking to the road.

Probably would make a big difference. But given that we are now going to experience ice after the snow it might have an adverse effect if you ended up in a spin. Bit like a pendulum.
Just a thought!

gentle foot is all well and good but what do you do when your car comes to a rest on a patch of ice due to others driving badly, put it into 'D' and it happily refuses to budge an inch.

winter mode....no movement

summer mode no movement

drive no movement

2nd gear no movement

3rd same......

reverse nothing....

don't touch the pedal, touch the pedal, traction on, traction off....

nowt!

not that I care, I wouldnt change it for the world! :D

IT COULD BE WORSE.

Couldn't shift the car off the drive yesterday.
Onset of cabin-fever by tea-time so decided do walk a mile to Waitrose for restorative chocolate biscuits.

The rush hour traffic in Chichester is usually absolutely awful - yesterday; no more than two or three cars in sight at any one time.

Walking back in my clumping great mountaineering boots I caught up with a young man slithering along on in city slicker shoes. We got into conversation, he said he'd got into town at nine that morning, gone to work all day, then at home time he found that all the buses were now cancelled; he was walking home to Selsey, seven miles away. He said he had friends that he could call into en route if he needed to, but I admired his spirit and sympathise with anybody entirely reliant on public transport.
