hi

im thinking of buying this Merc 200 (W123) advertised on the road, near my house. I've had a look round it a couple of times, but not called to look properly yet. It's on an X plate (so 1982, i think) and has 112k on the clock. it has some rust below the rear windscreen, the rear passenger side door, and the same wheelarch and the area around it has been creased/dented and badly repaired and blown in. the paint isn't the best (and it's a pretty bad lightish metallic green), and it does have some bad scratches, and the front valance is shot. the chrome doesn't look too good, but probably just needs a good polish - as does the whole car!.
The driver's seat is pretty knackered, but the rest of the interior looks in good condition - or it would with a good clean.

so why am i even looking? Well, it's only up for £200. Surely it must be worth £175 if i buy it. i think if i buy it, and clean it up as much as possible, i must be able to get £500 - £600 (depending on whether it has an MOT). i know it's hard to say without seeing the car, but what do you guys think?

if i were you i'd walk away. £200 may not be a lot of money, but hoping for £500 for a 1982 W123 after applying a bit of spit and polish is perhaps optimistic. i don't mean to sound draconian, but ... it sounds as if the current owner hasn't been too bothered about maintenance etc: and so who knows what a can of worms you may be about to open?
