Importing 2000 SLK 230 from USA

Hi, I was wondering what is required to bring a US specification 2000 SLK 230 Kompressor into the UK. The shipping costs are minimal but could anyone tell me what must be modified to be able to register it in the UK? I was told that the headlights have to be changed along with a few other items but noone could give me a definitive list or the costs associated in importing the LHD car. Would it be extremely costly to maintain it in the UK assumming that it can be legalized after minor modifications? Someone told me that it can be driven in the UK for 1 full year but then it must be taken out if it is NOT converted to local specs/legalized. The car has less than 26,000 miles so I'd rather keep it if I can!
Any idea about insurance on an imported car?

hope that you are sorted now but if you are not the EASIEST way might be to ask an AMERICAN CAR Specialist in the UK for what needs adjusting to use the car on British roads and also contacting DVLA who register vehicles in UK as they have all the information regarding paying DUTIES/TAX .

Sure you don't want to car swap with my slk320 when I go to USA???!!!
