my year old s320 cdi with dpf was at first "a" service filled with shell helix 5w40 1229.5 oil...run for 10k miles on that oil..i bought it last week..noted oil and realized neededd 229.51 eg mobil 1 esp 5w30.....merc say we change oil and the filter will clean itself on driving.....are they right...is it an issue..should i refuse the car? ....some test results to follow from the computer printout.....oilman ? what is your opinion?..had car oil/filter changed..they said dpf was ok! then why do you need low ash oil if you can safely run 229.5 which is not low ash.

Because if you run for too many miles without the correct low ash oil you will clog the diesel particulate filter.

I'm no expert, but I doubt you'll have done any significant harm in only 10k miles. That engine will go round the clock at least twice.
