Independents in Cornwall

Hello wiggy

I started a thread on this very subject and you'll find that there are at least TWO independents in the Cornwall area. One in Truro, the other near Penzance. Since you live in Redruth (I assume) you could pick either. I have visited the one in Truro and can give it the green light.

Do a search on a criteria such as 'Cornwall'. You should find the thread and contact details for the independents easily enough.

The Penzance specialist

Hi wiggy

MotardMan has supplied the location of the Penzance specialist. They are located at Buryas Bridge which is west of Penzance. To get there take the bypass and they are located on the Lands End road just outside Penzance.

Hi wiggy

I, too, had cause to visit a Mercedes outlet and I chose the specialist in Truro rather than the dealer outside Truro. The specialist was closer when a minor problem occurred.

I had a bulb failure, the first thing to have gone wrong since purchasing the car in January. I had a pretty good idea which bulb had blown (nearside rear brake indicator) and the technical specialist, called Jason, who is also the owner of the business, diagnosed the problem in an instant and replaced the bulb in a couple of minutes. THERE WAS NO CHARGE.

Jason explained that the bulb normally costs 67p but a dealer would charge around £2.50p, without fitting. He also explained that the dealer hourly rate was now around £93 per hour. His rate was around £43.

Jason presummably fixed my problem because he believes a happy customer is likely to return. There was around a dozen vehicles in his garage so business must be good. All happy customers.

It is therefore all the more surprising that Mercedes dealers should continually seek to increase their charges which, I would have thought, would only serve to drive customers away and into the arms of the specialists. Maybe there is a curious reverse logic at work here; the higher the charges, the higher the perceived quality of service. Just a thought.

Yes, I will return to this specialist because he is Mercedes trained and uses Mercedes parts and materials. I have no wish to throw away money.

The average rates of pay in this area can be as low as £3 - 4 per hour. It therefore seems to make little sense for Mercedes dealers to charge rates that are wholly incompatible with the living standards of the local community. If Mercedes wishes to attract new buyers/owners it should be more sensitive to what the local community can afford and adjust their charges accordingly. After all, it works for the specialists.
