Injection 'Exciter'

I have a 190E 2.5-16v with , we believe, an injection problem. There could be a fault in the little electronic device on the side of the fuel distributor called, I believe, the exciter.

What we need to know is, how can we check this out?

The part you are refering to is called "an electro hydraulic actuator" I can't off the top of my head tell you how to check it though!
