Hi James, typically around the 100k mile mark, but its a bit of a how long is a piece of string question, I always run them with the engine covers off and check every now and then. As well as "chuffing" its not unusual to have an unpleasant smell in the cabin.

What area do you live in ? (Update your user details to show it ) that way a good independent MB Indy can be recommended by other members

As above, how long is the string.
It's not so much wear, they can decide to pass when the corrosive gasses have tracked a route across the copper washer and seat. Then there is likely to be the smell and associated chuffing.

Where possible remove cover and with torch inspect around the injector bore for black deposits. If it's bad it'l be apparent w/o a torch.
Trouble is some covers, like the 639 are bolt on. There I lift the bonnet and smell and listen.

The repair is somewhat involved but not scary, or overly expensive.

Not for black death,
other more significant issues yes. Then you might even fine the car smoking, running woof woof, and even failing to start.

it can happen at anytime pal , only real way to be sure is to have / do them so you won't have to ;)
Fair enough mate ,car is running smoothly, pulls like a train and only 89k on a 2003 .Will keep an eye on it and any sign of trouble will change all injectors and seals

I don't know if the corrosion tracks from the outside in or vice versa but I suppose you could spray some ACF50 or similar around the injectors and glowplugs as a preventative measure every now and again.
It might make them easier to remove if you have to in the future.
Its supposed to be good to 200 centigrade.
