When I come to insure I don't think I am going to get any NCD. Been driving for around 14 years with company cars, and I have had to get things repaired. It looks like there was only a single time where the company was able to get money back from the 3rd party. The other times I was just repairing scuffs etc.
Even though I am 43 some of the cars are coming back with a £1000 a year premium. Without any NCD I am well and truly screwed.

Most companies give an introductory discount I though but if you have a claims history then maybe not.
when I switched from a company car the insurance company gave me full NCD based on a letter from my previous employer.
Depending on when you last had a claim you may be entitled to some discount.

It's very frustrating, my claims have always to get the car back to pristine condition, and not because an "accident". If it was my car I wouldn't have claimed, I would have got the local body shop to sort out. The accident I had been involved with was when a car hit me on a roundabout, and they recorded the full amount. The cheapest quote for a c350 CDI was 716, online price.

I replied on your other thread. You can either:

1. Take the hit, pay the premiums and build up your NCD, or;
2. Have your missus insure the car, and put you on as a “named driver”.

I'm going to take out my own insurance and just build up NCD. I'm just going to have to find a cheaper car to start with. Thanks. of to sulk!!

Talk on the phone to Aviva or Directline and discuss - you can lower the premium by restricting mileage some companies I’ve found will try to tailor the cover to your circumstances you won’t get that from online comparison sites.

Thanks Malcolm, I will give that a go. I could easily get away with lower mileage.

Why do you need to find a cheaper car? Like I said, you’re going about this the wrong way. Find a car (or cars plural) that suits your needs and budget. Get insurance quotes for them all from Moneysupermarket. Then add those quotes to the running costs and take a view.

Insurance is an odd thing, a Golf might be more expensive to insure than an E Class (my Audi A3 cost more to insure than my CL).

Sorry, cheap was the wrong word. I meant a more basic car with lower isurance.

Insurance companies look at:

1. How likely a car model is to suffer an accident.
2. How likely it is to be stolen.

1. depends on your demographic and job. 2. depends on your home location.

Basic doesn’t always mean cheaper insurance. Also, if you keep £6k aside from your acquisition you’ll be fine for the first 3 years of ownership... by which time you’ll have built up enough NCD to make up the difference.

For a comparison I found a 52 plate Audi Quattro worth around £1000 and that policy came back at £650. I work in IT and live in a fairly low insurance area. Even for a knackered Mondeo Estate worth £200 the cheapest policy was £400.

So there you go then. You won’t make much of a saving by going for a cheapo basic car, but you’ll do so in far less safety and comfort...

Yep, I've not insured a car for 14 years, so these quotes were a shock!! Also, I wouldn't feel safe at motorway speeds in a £300 car!!
£280 for my wife's 1.3 yaris, she only pays £120!! Makes the quote of £750 for MB seem quite reasonable now.

Just did an online quote for a C Class 2.1 C250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Sport 5dr, and that came back at just £520. So that is fine. But when I went back into this and added a 1 NCD the price went to £588 for the same company!

For comparison, I pay approx:

£800 for the W211 E320 estate.
£450 for the W215 CL500 coupe.
£440 for the W212 E220 saloon.

Your £750 figure for zero no claims would, I’d imagine, drop down to £500-550 after a couple of years.

Hopefully, I'm in still minds whether to go for the 250. I just need to test drive as I've never driven a MB before. I've come from an Astra, Mondeo, Insignia background.

Fixed that for you.

You’ll see a completely different side to driving with two tonnes of Sindelfingen’s finest around you...

Cheap old cars/bangers are often more expensive to insure than a new car with a small engine,
premiums are calculated using statistics, bangers are more likely to be involved in an accident.
