Insuring a supercharger

I want to buy a kleemann supercharger for my c280 but how do i insure it. If i buy one and the car gets written off i wont get what i paid for it. Is there a way to insure it separatelly

Hi mahadeshwar

I have heard of very expensive and powerful hi-fi systems, the type that require multiple speakers capable of handling thousands on Watts, being insured as part of the vehicle, and separately. I asked this very question at a past Motorshow.

But I cannot recall encountering a request to insure part of an engine before. Fitting a supercharger will almost certainly increase the vehicle's insurance but you, if I understand you correctly, are looking for separate replacement cover for the supercharger in case of accident damage. Superchargers do fail in service so would you be looking to insure against random failure too?

Specialised supplementary equipment either carried in the vehicle or attached to it can be separately insured through an appropriate insurance agent. But finding one might be tricky because of the very nature of the component you have in mind. If you can find insurance it will likely incur a very high insurance premium. I assume you are prepared for that eventuality.

Maybe your best option would be to try an insurer that deals with modified or specialist vehicles. It might prove by far the cheaper option.

As for Phil, but it may be worth talking to the supercharger provider/fitter. I fitted some aftermarket Xenons to the W220 and the deal included 2 years insurance cover against failure/damage. That was a new one on me, but clearly some specialists who fit expensive afterthoughts do consider these matters.

I'm intrigued by your example. I can understand a car component being guaranteed for 2 years, but 2 years insurance cover??? A whole car - yes! It is an interesting problem.

I note you mention '... against failure/DAMAGE.' which sounds like the kind of deal 'mahadeshwar' is looking for. But what happens after 2 years? It is my impression that 'mahadeshwar' is looking for some kind of ongoing insurance. I'm sure he will correct me if I'm wrong.

At the back of my mind has also been the technical problem of fitting an aftermarket supercharger to a c280. Surely other engine modifications will be required to cope with supercharging?
