I'm looking into restoring a 1970's 280e. I do have a few questions, though.

1) I'm only interested in doing this if I can put a pair of the square european headlights on it. If I can't put the square european headlights on an american 280e, then forget it. Those circular headlights are awful. Also, where can I get a set of square european headlights?

2) How reliable are these old Mercedeses? Should I look into buying a junker and putting a more reliable and fuel efficient japanese engine in it? Has anyone here ever swapped an engine in an old mercedes before?

3) I can't seem to find any gasoline powered Mercedes from the 1980's with the same body type as the late 1970's 280e. I can only find the diesel powered 300D and 300SD. What are all the names this car went under, and during which years was it sold?
