Morning all, I've been trawling the forums for some time and thought it was time I joined the Borg. I'm waiting for my son to pass his driving test (though if he takes much longer - Covid not helping - I might leave him to do it on his bike) so I can sell my current hatch back and buy a w216 (still not sure about 5.5 or 4.7). I used to have a W220 s320D which started running on less-than-six cylinders at 178,000, and I haven't been able to get beyond the fact it was the best way to travel our green and pleasant land. I'm thinking that if I buy a V8, then when it loses a cylinder at 178,000, I'll still have one more than with the S-class, so that will still be winning!

Very good to be here. 4.7? I understand wanting that - but is the simplicity of the 5.5 (plus the tried-and-tested part of) worth thinking about? I'm not interested in massive power - a woofly v8 and long-legged, luxurious distance covering is my thing. HOWEVER - the flat torque 'curve' of the 4.7 does definitely appeal. Are there any thoughts on how these versions are holding up in 2020 (in terms of maintenance, not price)? I've already accepted the mpg and £2000 support bank balance. Are they going to turn out like the 'Dallas 560 SEC'? I want to own it until EV and government ban petrol. What a car!!!

I’d go with the 4.7 twin turbo, very nice engine indeed.

Welcome I remember those days of sons passing driving tests 26 years ago for me.
I had a Golf GTI 16V & my wife had a 205 GTI. We sold the 205 & the wife had my Golf. I bought a Nova 15TD which I ended up keeping for 100K miles.

I do like the idea of the twin turbo - but seems like more things to go wrong. And I know that the NA 5.5 will be more than adequate. But... who never wanted a little bit more? Are they both as reliable as each other?
