Hi
I have a 1999 SLK230. Can someone please tell me if it has a timing belt or a timing chain. I have done a quick search on this forum and I suspect that it has a chain, although I did not see the SLK specifically mentioned. I would like to know for peace of mind. I did have a belt break on me once before on a vectra, very expensive 1 cam belt snapped and many valves bent. Luckily it was still covered by the warranty that I purchased when buying the car.
Cheers
Stuart

If you take off the oil filler cap and look inside, you will see it is a chain - duplex and good for about 250k miles... One of the reason I bought a merc rather than an audi

can we make this (and other FAQ's) a sticky thread?

If it has a three pointed star on the front of the car, then it has a cam CHAIN not a belt. End of story. Not having a go at the originator of this thread (its a valid question) - its just the same question comes up about once a month (it seems)
