Is this an MAF problem?

Hi guys,

I am back again for yet some more problems with my W-Reg E240. I drove a few days ago and suddenly found the car to be in neutral (no gear). This was at a speed of about 40mph going up from a tunnel. I pressed the accelerator a few times and got it back into gear. That was scary!!

On the same day, I drove into a street quite slowly...slowed down, stopped to reverse out but lo and behold, there was nothing at R gear. I tried D but still nothing. The engine was on all the while but no gears. I switched the engine off and started again, put into R and it worked. Even more scary!!

And yes, my gear shift is not as smooth as I would like it to be...at slow speed gear 1 to 2 seems to be jumpy.

I have read some threads today about similar problems and MAF. What is MAF and how much would it cost to change/ repair it?

Someone told me to check the gear oil and see if it needs topping up. Apparently there is a dip stick to check. I tried looking at the engine but as naive as I am, I just could not locate anything..not even the battery...my oh my!

My learned seniors...rescue time please!

You have a dip stick you say for the gear box, rear of engine, do check the fluid level

I was told that it is at the rear end of the engine. I found at the right rear end something that looks like it could contain a dip stick but it was closed with some cover and writes 'For MB service only'...no further action from there..did not even know how to remove that particular cover.

Thats means you dont have one then, anti-temper cap!

You need a specialist dipstick to check it, the anti tamper part of the cap (shaped like a rectangle and either coloured red or black) snaps off leaving the rest in there which needs to be pushed through to the bottom. Then the cap can be removed, watch the o-ring and make sure that comes out as well. If your oil level is low, make sure that the gearbox central electrics connector is not leaking. The seals go on them both internally and externally. Very common and can lead to disasterous results if left for too long as the oil seeps up the the engine wiring harness eventually entering the engine ECU costing $1000's to repair.

Hi Sand---it sounds like auto fluid level--get to a service centre (K-fit) or the like and ask for a free check on the fluid level of the autobox (agreeing to pay if it needs topping up)
If you lift the rear seat-you may get a surprise? ----- it will solve your search for the battery!.

As H/M!! not going to be a MAF fault!

I wouldnt be so sure, the W210 is a funny ****er when the MAF goes down. But you do need to get it on diags really to be sure as its a complex MB and guessing could be expensive.

if your local to me Cambs, then come over happy to take a look and see for free.

I remember that when I took my car to a workshop last month to get a part changed, I was asked by the workshop guy (after putting on the diagnostic box) whether I was losing power while driving. I told him I am not too sure because I have not been driving the car for long and this is my first Merc. He did mention about 'sensor' and now it clicks...he must have meant the MAF then and told me to go back to him if I experience it.

To be honest, I am quite naive about the car and am worried that I might have to spend much more than required. Hence, the seeking of advice from our experienced and learned members in this forum.

I was also told by a mechanic that I will need to service my gearbox but I have not done it yet.

Is the MAF going to solve this particular problem or will a gearbox service also be required? These were both quoted at quite a high price.

Funny that a cabbie in the village had a 200 petrol, 600k on it and he still got nearly a grand for it!!!!!!!

I am in Birmingham, Jib.
So guys, what do I do first? Get to a workshop to check the gearbox fluid or do what H/M has suggested. Is that a gearbox service?

Any good suggestion where I can go in Birm?

You check the level of the fluid before anything, if it is low, then check where HM said

Thanks TV.

Now before I totally lose this point...
I also noticed the same day my gear went nuetral that the temperature was getting higher. It was almost 3 quarter way up, when normally it is at halfway. Of course this happened when I was in town slow traffic. It got back to normal when I hit the motorway again.

Could these be related in any way...temperature and my gear problem?

Ahh the engine temperature could be related to this fault. The engine coolant radiator and the gearbox fluid cooler are joined in one unit. Its not unheard of for the two fluids to mix within this component.

Get the gearbox fluid level checked and take a look in the coolant expansion tank for anything abnormal like a creamy fluid indicating the fluids have mixed. Hope for your sakes this hasn't happened....
