After having our VW Golf for 2yrs we've decided we want to go back to having a C Class Estate. Our problem is we can't decide which would be the best one.

Our last Merc was a 2003 200k Elegance Estate and apart from having a problem with the supercharger, which was replaced under warranty, it was a great car that moved when you needed it to.

Now because of the way they are increasing the road tax we were contemplating getting a 220CDi but are worried that it might be a bit sluggish. We've looked for a 270CDi but they seem very thin on the ground in the price range we are looking at.

We don't pay for our fuel so having a petrol car isn't really an issue, although obviously buying diesel would mean fewer visits to the petrol station. However we don't want a car that is sluggish as we want to keep it at least 3yrs so it's important we get the right one.

There seems to be a lot of 180k's for sale at the moment and once again there don't seem to be that many 200k's, not sure why that is. We aren't looking for a super fast car just something that will have a bit of go in it.

We've got about 20k maximum to spend and are looking for Iridum Silver with sports pack. Opinions welcome please :)

Hi Lyn and congrats to you and the addition to your family.

You can now afford to buy the new C class with that much, a very different car, and highly rated

Hi Malcolm and thanks for the congrats on our new addition, isn't she just gorgeous :D

I have to say though that I really don't like the look of the new C Class. I know it seems to be highly rated but I still think it's quite ugly. I love the peanut shaped front lights on the older C Class and think the new one has too much of a Chrylser look to it

Now if we had the money we would be looking for something as beautiful as the car you have, but sadly we don't :p

I had 2 06 model C classes while the SLK was having one of its visits the repair shop.

The 180 petrol was quieter than the 220diesel and both were manual. They went well enough.

I did go in an estate 270cdi way back in 2003. It was very good.

Unless you want rocket ship performance, I don't think either will worry you really. So I would go for the one with the lowest running costs! If you are going to keep it a while, go for small engine, higher spec (Highest you can afford). Poverty Spec Big engines seem to be a waste to me.

TopGear Magazine team have been running a 220CDI sport for a while. They rate it very highly indeed. In this months magazine they say the COMAND is the best sat nav on the market! They also say build quality is a vast improvement on that last model and is as good as the best.

The always have a merc in the test team! I think they have a soft spot for them. Alond with Range rovers they always seem to have too.
