Hi there

Just recently purchased a c-class 220cdi Avantgarde se estate 0n a 52 plate, looking for some information on whether these cars have a cambelt or a chain and if so how often should they be changed. The vehicle has full merc history and was recently serviced at 85k. Would be gratefull for some information on this subject.

Regards jc

This link: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=13416 is so similar, it will probably answer your question. I think all Mercedes' engines (even the ickle 3 cylinder one in the Smart City Coupe) is timed using a chain rather than a belt. To reinforce my original post, 96,000 miles is given as a value. I vaguely remember this from a discussion on the W126 coupe models. I checked in the official Mercedes service schedule for the W114 and it simply aint listed. It did go into the procedure to check the timing (which can vary due to chain stretch) and you can fit offset woodruff keys to adjust it 4° or so at a time.
