Wondered if anyone had used John Weir in Aberdeen for their servicing etc. and what was their experience. Also would you reccomend using a main dealer for servicing, repairs etc. I have always used a good independant garage for this sort of work in the past and have grown to trust them over the years. I'm reluctant to start again with someone new - and probably more expensive.

Sue,
This is always tricky. The independents are generally going to better and cheaper that the dealer. They have to be as they are only going to grow through recommendation. Unfortunatly the dealers have you with the Mobilio warranty. (assuming the car has one).My understanding is that whilst the parts warranty is valid wherever the car is serviced due to eu regulations, the Mobilio and corrosion warranties are a 'goodwill' warranty, which is invalidated if the car hasn't been to a dealer recently. My car goes to an independent for all work other than the absolutely standard servicing. That way I keep more of my wallet and still keep the FMBSH.

John R Weir

Hi

Have used John R Weir before for repairs, but not servicing. Technicians are experienced - but get a quote for the work to be done before giving them the green light.

The only gripe I have (and this is the same for Audi/Mercedes) is they're an arrogant bunch. However you will have to use them if you want to keep your warranty valid. Weigh this up on the age and value of the car.

If you're looking for an independent (in Aberdeen area) then try Bavaria Auto Werke off George Street.

I use John Weir's in Grangemouth. I stress that I do most of the stuff myself and fall back on them when I get totally stuck. The mechanics are very free with giving out advice and information.

The above link was a previous experience, my most recent trip was to buy the tool to pop out the intrument panel, they just took out the panel for me...no charge, again!

Thanks to everyone for their replies.
I like the idea of using the dealer for the servicing and my independant for any other work - which I'm hoping there wont be too much of!!
My only other worry is that there doesnt seem to be any indication of how often I should expect it to need a service. I gather that Assyst tells me when it is needed. Does this meen that it could be every other month if the car feel like it? I'm told that it depends on my "Driving Style". What does this mean?

The ASSYST will adjust to driving style as in number so of short or long journeys etc. More long journeys the interval extends. I have seen the 13,000 miles only go down to 9,000 after riving 10,000 miles but all long journey work. If your manual has the details for service A and service B take a good look at what is scheduled to be done in each service. You do need to keep a good eye on them, the cars do get problems and much of these seem to come from lack of dealer knowledge.

I have kept the Mobilo up since new, had to call breakdown recovery out twice, probably worth keeping it up. The snag with independents is that if the part that fails and causes the breakdown was fitted by someone other than a main dealer they will try to get off the hook if they can argue it was incorrectly fitted. I have worked on the basis that MB do all servicing so if its wrong its their problem. When I went legal over problems they had to pay out and to be honest when the breakdowns and MB payout are added up the MB work out cheaper. Just be prepared for a lot of hassle. As an aside we had a Peugeot [diesel] break a timing belt at 90,000 miles, full history from new, serviced every 3,000 miles, recovered and repaired by the same Main Dealer with no argument at all. He did not even ask for the cost of the service which was due 500 miles after but which I offered to pay for.

After 4 years and poor service I now keep up an annual family travel/breakdown policy [Europ Assistance] which probably has as good cover as Mobilo. The thing is Mobilo will only recover you and the car, it will not pay for repairing the cause of the breakdown if it's mechanical or electrical. In my case it did not even cover the cost of recovery or of repairing a total brake failure 5 months after they were repaired by an MB dealer despite the same fault returning. If they argue about the cause of the breakdown they will sting you with the cost of recovery too. I have also found a Main Dealer who is more sympathetic and have stayed with them.

There is a rust problem with Mercedes and they seem to be sorting these out, not so sure though how long this will last.

John R Weir

I have had bad experiences with John R Weir in Aberdeen. Examples include when they took off the mudflaps and couldn't work out how to clip them back on again. So they drilled some nice big holes in the bodywork and screwed them back on. I have now clipped them back on properly but needless to say the panels are now rusting. Also I took the car in for new track rod end and specifically asked that they had adjusted the tracking and tightened it properly. So several hundred miles later on holiday the next week I was not impressed to see the inside edge of the tyres scrubbed to the beading. I was though compensated with a discount off the new set of tyres now needed although I'd rather not have needed them in the first place. The people in the parts department are good - knowledgable and friendly.
