Before fits of hysterical laughter, YES I KNOW IT'S DIESEL

Just got this car, ex dem, 7K on the clock.

Had a 3 series diesel and it was a lot quiter than this? So am I expecting too much? very happy with the performance, just wondered if I had a duff'n. Also it seems to quiten down a tad when it's warm, but not by a lot.

Regards Drift.

No one has a 270CDi then?

I would really appreciate a discussion with someone who owns the above. I just to the car back to the dealership, and the head mechanic said it was normal for this car? I can't honestly believe that a car of such supposed quality should rumble so much. Doing a steady 70 I get this awfull vibration that comes and goes with engine revs. We have Belingo vans at work that are quiter at 70 than this thing.

Anyone in the Kent area with one? so we can compare?

Hi,

Can't comment on c270CDi but do have an ML270CDi (same engine, different power/torque etc.).
It is a bit noisy (relatively) at start up (especially in cold) but settles down as warms up. At 70mph (2500rpm) its almost silent (car soundproofing obviously helps) but its does 'clatter' a bit on acceleration etc. Certainly I would NOT describe my engine in the manner you have!
Heard an old Peugout Diesel start up to-day and by comparison the CDi engine is 10 x quieter/refined.

Cheers,

Dieter

Dont own one but have driven an estate for 2 days.Certainly no vibration at 70 & not unduly noisy. Yes they clatter a little until properly warmed up
but noise should not be intrusive inside the cab when on fixed throttle.
My understanding is that BMW diesels have no peer for silence.
Tke it to another dealer for a second opinion.

I have an E270 CDi which also has the same engine. Although it is noisy at startup when driving along there is both no intrusive noise in the cabin and certainly no vibraiton.

I've got a C250 TD (ok so it's not the same engine, but it's close enough).

It gets very loud when you stamp on the accelerator and push it hard or when you use the kickdown switch, but in normal day to day driving (I use motorways at 70-90 or so and local roads upto about 40) it's pretty good. At 40 or so the engine is pretty much silent (not surprising given it's running at about 1000rpm)

At 70+ it get's noiser (which means the stereo has to go on louder) but this seems to be road / tyre noise more than anything else. Also there's never been any noticeable vibration, other than the usual stuff you would expect with poor quality roads.

I had my boss with me the other day and he didnt realise it was a diesel until I told him. Mine's done 56K, 4 years old.

cheers

Would concur with all the opions - BMW diesel 6s are regarded as the benchmark for refinement, but yours shouldn't be showing those signs. My 220 CDi is only really noticeable when cold or when standing next to it  - mind you I did come from a Volvo!!!!!!

Thanks Chaps

The dealer does not have another 270CDI so I am some what stuck. I think I will call another dealer and see if someone else has one. I do agree with the statements about when it's cold, and I accept that. However when it's warm, it still rumbles....

Thanks for the responses.

Paul.

My E270 cdi went in for a warranty repair (problem with kickdown) last week. They fixed the problem, however, the car is noisier than ever. All they did was change a pressure valve. Anyone have any idea's as to what is causing the noise? It is so lound in the cabin. Mercedes are saying there is nothing wrong. I have asked them to have another look at it, but I could use some ideas so I can challenge them?

THE 250td engine is nothing like the CDi engine, ok theyre both diesels, but the 250 is a traditional turbo diesel with chamber injection, whereas the cdi, has diesel sprayed through each injector making it a much more refined engine

My father has a 270Cdi very quiet at 70. I would get your dealer to check for fault codes on the ecu my 220Cdi started sounding like a tractor ECU had gone into limp home mode.

Most people I know with the 270cdi unit have had serious engine trouble inside warranty period. Replacing turbo units seems quite common too. I would watch the engine closely and make sure you have it fully checked over independently. The cost will pay for itself. Those engines are a dream to drive, just a pity the reliability is not there.

E 220 cdi, very silent

My E 220 cdi 1999, automatic, is very silent indeed. It certainly makes a lot less noise than a 330d I have driven once at a steady speed. When accellerating though it can be compared to a 4 cilinder petrol engine. I have allso owned a partner hdi and this made twice as much noise.

The 270 cdi should make even less noise. If you have a manual gearbox you should change shifts at 2000 revs/min.

Diesel engines get quieter as they do more miles. I think after around 15,000 it starts to settle in.
However, should be silent at 70, does sound like you have a problem...
