Is the key sending out a IR signal, try in front of digital camera
Press any button and put key into ignition within 30 sec and turn to 2

The red light does not mean that its sending a IR signal

To synchronise the system, do as follows:-

1. point transmitter in key to the door receiver.

2. press the key button briefly.

3. go to ignition switch and turn the key to position 2 (this must be done within 30 secs of above).

4. the infrared remote control is now operational again.

There are two types of infra red systems on w124s, with different option codes. The procedure for synchronising is different. One is as described by kth286 above, and applies to option code 885. The other procedure, for option code 880, is: aim transmitter at drivers door LED. Press button for 5 seconds. Go round to passenger door, unlock with flip-out key.

Interesting! Some of the RCL systems seem to have an alarm & immobiliser and some don't. I wonder if that's the difference between the two option codes?
