No just front DRLs
Well in that case it is just as I originally said in my first reply to you - when you turn off auto lights on your Mercedes it behaves exactly the same as your wifes Corsa - no rear lights.
Then you replied saying "what ever I do with the SL's light switch I can't drive with no rear lights on in poor visibility"
This made me think you had rear DRL because if not and your light switch is set to off then the rear lights are off. I can see now you are actually sayng that you would choose to turn your lights on in poor visibility so that your rear lights are on and not just the front DRL.
There has been a lot of confusion going on here but I think we can both agree that if a vehicle has auto lights then there is no logical reason not to use them. One can still choose to override it on occasion but the default position should always be to auto.
I mentioned about my previous Audi having both front and rear DRL, which together with auto lights makes the whole thing completely foolproof.
Rear DRL are only in conjunction with LED lights, but more and more cars are coming with rear LEDS now so this would not be a problem to implement.
I'm glad we got there in the end. :)

Confusion indeed. My SL is fitted with LED lights. When the engine is running and there is sufficient daytime light, only the front DRLs are on and no dash lights. However there is a position on the light switch (fully anticlockwise) where you can have no illumination at all. Maybe Audi and Mercedes have a different system.:)

What you describe could only work with a traditional dashboard with analogue clocks, and they are becoming increasingly rare nowadays.

On a w251 you have the option if DRL on or off via the menu system.
If its on then position 0 and Auto are the same i.e. the headlights and tail lights will turn on when the ambient light is too low.
If DRLs are set off in the menus the light switch behaves as per any other MB. 0 is off, auto will turn headlights and sidelights on and off according to ambient light and other positions for sidelights only or headlights and sidelights on.
There is no circumstances where DRL is on and taillights off in poor light.

Other MBs may be different.

Personally, I love Keyless. Greatest thing since sliced bread!

But for those opposed to it – Genesis has the answer. No key at all!!

Facial ID to open the door and Fingerprint ID to start the car.
