Hi, I notice a considerable delay in changing down using the throttle as compared to the gearlever. The service history showed a gearbox service at 30,000 miles and I am now at 95,000 so probably overdue. The local automatic specialist recommends every 40,000. Will new oil and filter improve matters, or is there another cause for this, like a conductor plate? Also, the job looks relatively simple but the local specialists are charging £350. (£120-150 will be for the oil and kit). There is also uncertainty as to the quantity of oil required and weather the torque converter can be drained. Has anyone carried out this procedure or can recommend someone in Norfolk?

Take a drive to Alex Crow in Stowmarket Suffolk , he is an MB specialist and won’t charge anywhere near £350 for the 5g gearbox service .

You are well overdue a gbox service.
Kickdown also depends if you drive in Economy, Sport, comfort - depwnding on your car.

Get the box done and take it from there.

You wont drain the TC.

There are two settings on the CLK diesel, Standard and comfort. I can't say I notice any difference in either setting, but I remember the response on my previous W208 230K being quicker.

Comfort on my S211 pulls away in second gear and has quite a lazy throttle response.

Always use the standard setting on mine, I can't see any benefit in using comfort, except maybe in snowy and icy conditions during the winter months. I think the same setting on my W208 was "w" for winter.

Money Pit is like that in C mode, and S mode. It just keeps saying to me, 'what's your rush Buddy'......
Kickdown is best avoided on both my S211. Foot to floor, click, hesitation whilst the car contacts Mercedes for permission to proceed with the request to hurry things along. Permission granted, (by Morse code and carrier pigeon) selects lowest gear and maximum RPM possible for current road speed then instantly changes up a gear.

Just got Nick at Alex Crow to do the gearbox service, diff oil change and a thorough check up underneath. Great guy, happy to answer questions and give useful advice. Recommended. Might go back for remap with EGR delete, they want £90 for that.

Good to hear! Is the gearbox behaving more as you expect now?

Well, to be honest, I didn't notice much change. I asked about the kickdown delay and Nick said that is normal apparently. He did show me the old filter and it had a date stamp on it. 2013. So a change was overdue. More about prevention being better than cure.

No. There is no drain plug on the torque converter, so what they do at Alex Crow, is to disconnect the cooling pipes and flush the new fluid in that way. I was surprised when I asked about intervals, they said 30,000 and then every 100,000 miles. The local specialists specify every 40,000. That sounds more reasonable.

The kick down on the SLK200 was leisurely particularly if it went down 2 gears, better to use the paddles.
The kick down on the SLC with the 9 speed box is really quick.
